Japanese Horse of the Year Vodka Retired

Vodka
, a two-time Japanese Horse of the Year, has been retired from racing, according to Reuters. Her retirement came after she suffered a nose bleed in an unplaced finish in a warm-up race, the Derrinstown Stud Intikhab al Maktoum Challege-Round 3 (UAE-II), for the March 27 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). She was scheduled to be retired after the World Cup. She is booked to Cartier Award winner

Vodka also bled in winning the 2009 Japan Cup (Jpn-I).
“When we saw she had a nose bleed again after the race the owner (Yuzo Tanimizu) and I decided to retire her,” Vodka's trainer, Katsuhiko Sumii, told reporters. “It would be wrong to push her. We wanted one final swansong for Vodka but it wasn't to be, unfortunately. Vodka was a true champion. We are deeply grateful to her.”
Vodka gained special status in 2007 by becoming the first filly to win the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) in 64 years.
A five-time champion, Vodka (Tanino Gimlet—Tanino Sister, by Rousillon) has been retired with 10 wins and eight placings from 26 starts and earnings of $13,147,826. She was named Horse of the Year in 2008-09. Her earnings are the highest ever for a mare in Japan and the third highest all-time.
Vodka will not be returned to Japan following her mating to Sea The Stars.
