Vision 2020 launches fantasy handicapping game

Posted: Thursday, August 25, 2011 6:56 PM

Vision 2020, a leadership group created by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, has launched “Fantasy Capping”, an online fantasy handicapping game aimed at engaging new and uninitiated fans.
Fantasy Capping focuses on placing simple fantasy wagers (win, place, show and exacta) on a single graded stakes race each week.
Each league, led by a Vision 2020 group member, keeps score and standings of the wagers throughout the racing season, ending with the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. A season is also being planned to coincide with the Triple Crown schedule.
“Fantasy Capping is our group’s first project,” said Bret Jones, a Vision 2020 steering committee member. “We believe it has the potential to do what every single person in our industry recognizes we have to do—bring new fans, as well as potential gamblers, to our sport.”
Each week, the featured race is displayed on the Fantasy Capping website with horse-by-horse analysis and a history of the race and its venue.
“Our Vision 2020 group believes that two of the biggest issues facing our industry are our struggle to attract new, youthful fans and our inability to bring significant national attention to the race schedule falling between the Triple Crown races and the Breeder’s Cup. We believe Fantasy Capping can be a great tool in helping on both these critical fronts.”
Jones said the project already has started to attract some attention from its target demographic.
“At current, we have already signed up over 300 young people that otherwise simply would not be paying attention to Saturday racing,” he said. “And we’re just getting started.”
