By Jay Privman Lookin At Lucky, the champion 2-year-old colt of 2009, is on course to make his 2010 debut on March 13, but whether he remains at Santa Anita for that day's Grade 2, $150,000 San Felipe Stakes, or heads toOaklawnParkfor the Grade 2, $300,000 Rebel Stakes has yet to be determined, according to trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert has gone back and forth on where Lookin At Lucky would resurface this spring. After Lookin At Lucky's victory in December in the CashCall Futurity atHollywood, which ended his 2-year-old campaign, Baffert strongly considered having the colt race on dirt surfaces, like the one at Oaklawn. But in more recent weeks, he seemed firmly committed to the San Felipe on Pro-Ride. Last weekend, though, Baffert won the Southwest Stakes atOaklawnParkwith Conveyance. It was an encouraging result despite having the race delayed by five days because of cold weather. Conveyance will not return to Oaklawn for the Rebel, though, so there would be no conflict with Baffert having to run Conveyance against Lookin At Lucky. Conveyance will get more time between starts, and there is the possibility, Baffert said, that Conveyance could go to Dubai for the Grade 2, $2 million United Arab Emirates Derby on March 27. Conveyance is owned by the Zabeel Racing International of Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed al-Maktoum, the oldest son of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the ruler ofDubai. If Conveyance remains in theUnited States, he will be pointed to the Grade 1, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 3, or the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn on April 10, Baffert said. Another Baffert 3-year-old is scheduled to leaveCaliforniafor his next race. Tiz Chrome, who was fourth in the Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita in his first start around two turns, will head to Aqueduct for the Grade 3, $250,000 Gotham Stakes on March 6. "He came out of the race with a foot bruise, but he's doing better by the day," Baffert said. At Santa Anita on Saturday, Baffert is scheduled to run The Program in the Grade 3, $150,000 Sham Stakes.

Larry Zapeye was commenting on this story this morning on twitter. Said it never ceases to amaze him---how many headlines Baffert can generate. First it was Lucky was heading to Dubai. Now CONVEYANCE might be heading there.....ugh....too many Baffert 3YOs---my head is hurting trying to sort this out!

There was a recent article in the DRF that the new track at Meydan is playing to closers. Maybe that is why Baffert was considering sending LaL to Dubai but my guess he stays stateside and runs in the Derby. I wouldn't be surprises to see Life is Sweet sent there, however.

Hi Treet. Sorry I've been away for a few days, been really busy at work, which is a good thing, and getting ready to have our niece rejoin us. She went north hoping her mother would be one of those released early but it didn't happen as California elected to release prisoners from county jails instead of the state prisons. Our niece wanted to try and make it on her own but has now decided to come back to us, which is fine. One fortunate thing happened as our new Australian Shepherd puppy ate through one of our telephone lines so Connie moved our 2nd landline up to my bedroom where my office phone is. We got a call from our sister and, during the call, her 14-year-old daughter happened to call on the other line. It occured to me that I could combine the two handsets together and allow Helene to talk to her children for the 1st time in 16 months. Guess what? It went from one call a week from her to now there have been 5 calls since then in 8 days. Her children are overjoyed to be able to reconnect with their mother.

Thank you both. Yes, it is wonderful for all of them--maybe not so much for Jeff. Idiot that he is. Anyway, I received this video tonight from one of my aunts and it is an important message to remember. Might save a life someday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5huVSebZpM

Yes, clearly the purse money is a very COMPELLING reason to go to Dubai.

I think Conveyance going to Dubai would be a mistake. The track is clearly playing to closers, not frontrunners, so he wouldn't be a shoo-in to win and then would be out months before he could return to racing. Here is an update on Baffert's horses from The Bloodhorse: Lookin At Lucky Work Doesn't Concern Baffert by Jason Shandler Date Posted: 2/24/2010 1:01:29 PM Last Updated: 2/24/2010 1:15:49 PM
When champion Lookin At Lucky turned in a less than eye-opening six furlong work in 1:15.40 at Santa Anita Feb. 22, there were some that thought it was a red flag the 3-year-old colt isn’t doing all that well. Trainer Bob Baffert dispelled that notion, saying it was exactly the type of work he was looking for.
“He went very smoothly,” Baffert said Feb. 24. “He actually went seven-eighths and did it in hand. He looked good. You have to be careful on this (Pro-Ride) track; you can’t do too much. You have to adapt to it. “He didn’t have much time off and he’s a very fit horse. He’s doesn’t need much.” The individual favorite when Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager ended, Lookin At Lucky is 5-1-0 from six career starts, his only loss coming by a head in the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) in November. Baffert said the Smart Strike colt will either go in the San Felipe (gr. II) at Santa Anita or the Rebel (gr. II) on Oaklawn Park’s dirt surface for his next start. Both are March 13. “We’ll make up our minds soon,” Baffert said. “We know he’ll be running somewhere March 13. I like Oaklawn, especially after last weekend (when Conveyance won the grade III Southwest Stakes over the same track). The Rebel looks like it will be a nice, tough race. We’ll see what happens.” Baffert said Lookin At Lucky’s final Kentucky Derby prep will come in either the Wood Memorial (gr. I) at Aqueduct, Arkansas Derby (gr. I) at Oaklawn, or the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I). He ruled out the Louisiana Derby (gr. I) for his star, who is owned by Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman. As for Zabeel Racing International’s Conveyance, Baffert said his outlook has now changed after the speedy Indian Charlie colt went wire-to-wire in the Southwest to remain undefeated in four starts. “When he won the San Rafael (on Jan. 16) it was nice but it wasn’t eye-opening,” Baffert said. “But I thought this race was a very good test. He proved to me he is ready for the next level and it threw him into the Derby mix. I didn’t know if he was ready before. The way he finished and didn’t cave in was impressive.” Being owned by Zabeel’s Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum, Conveyance is also nominated to the United Arab Emirates Derby (UAE-II) in Dubai March 27, but Baffert said they have not made up their minds on his next race. The Wood and Arkansas Derby are also options. Finally, Baffert said his other Derby hopeful, Tiz Chrome, is being pointed toward the Gotham (gr. III) at Aqueduct on March 6 after a disappointing fourth–place finish in the Robert Lewis (gr. II) Feb. 13. The son of Tiznow came out of that race with a minor foot bruise, but is scheduled to return to the work tab Feb. 25. “I think he’ll get back on track in this next race,” Baffert said. “Synthetics are not his bag. I think he’ll improve on dirt.”

Forget about the track playing to closers Oso, that’s a huge point but my gosh who in their right mind is going to send a 3 year old developing baby over there on that type of trip and put the horse thru that other than the sheiks. I guess that’s why only certain trainers train for them because they do a bit too much at times. I couldn’t imagine someone like Barclay Tagg or Larry Jones saying “oh yeah lets fly the horse the 6,000 miles over there to run in a race and knock him out for the rest of the year” it just seems so wild they keep wanting to do things their way. Baffert sounds so confused, “I didn’t know he was a derby horse, but I was impressed with how he didn’t cave in the SW, but we’re gonna think about going to dubai for that Million dollars and then see if we can get him ready for the Derby” hasn’t worked before Bob what makes you think ur gonna be the first. That’s the part of the game I Abhor not doing right by the animal.

hold on take a moment to think this one out.
conveaynace isnt going to win the derby or a TC race IMO because of the distance. The TC is grueling He could go over to DUBAI run in one big race Have a nice shot because all the a horses for here will be pointing to the derby. Come back and jst rest up and it the summer races.
To me it makes more sense. Yes it favors closers but hes got great speed and he may just be able to wire the field
